Justinian Award for Professional Excellence
The Justinian Award for Professional Excellence is named after the Emperor Justinian I of the Roman Empire. He commended ten of the wisest men in his realm to draw up a collection of the Roman laws. This collection is known as the Corpus Juris Civilis, which means body of civil law.
The Justinian Award is the premier award for members of the Johnson County Bar Association and is awarded to those attorneys who have exemplified the following:
- Integrity
- Service to the Community
- Service to the Legal Profession
- Warmth, Friendliness and Camaraderie
The Award shall consist of a plaque appropriate for engraving and shall become the personal property of the named recipient. The recipient's name shall be carried thereafter in perpetuity on a permanent plaque displayed in the Johnson County Bar Association headquarters.

Earl E. O'Connor Civility Award
On February 9, 1999, the Board of Directors of the Johnson County Bar Association unanimously voted to create the "Earl E. O'Connor Civility Award." The award honors the memory of the late federal judge who was a respected jurist dedicated to legal scholarship and professionalism. The award is given to a member of the Johnson County Bar Association honoring commitment to civility in the practice of law demonstrated through Professionalism, Honor, Integrity, Preparation and Advocacy.
The Earl E. O'Connor Civility Award shall be awarded annually to a member of the Johnson County Bar Association who demonstrates civility in his or her practice in accordance with the qualities that Judge O'Connor exemplified:
- Professionalism
- Honor
- Integrity
- Preparation
- Advocacy

Liberty Bell Award
The Liberty Bell Award is awarded to a non-lawyer for outstanding service in one of these areas:
- Promoting a better understanding of our Constitution and the Bill of Rights;
- Encouraging greater respect for law and the Courts;
- Stimulating a deeper sense of individual responsibility so that citizens recognize their duties as well as their rights;
- Contributing to the effective functioning of our institutions of government, and;
- Fostering a better understanding of the rule of law.
