The City of Lenexa, Kansas is a growing, dynamic and progressive city due in large measure to its commitment to quality growth as a “planned community” in partnership with its citizens. Lenexa has a diverse population of approximately 48,000, with a similar number of people working in the city each day. Encompassing 34.40 square miles of land, Lenexa is located in the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, and was ranked 26 of CNNMoney.com 100 Best Small Towns to Live. Lenexa’s strategic location at the intersection of multiple major transportation routes has contributed to its growth and development as well as increased activity in the Municipal Court. Looked to as a leader in local government initiatives, Lenexa has a highly competent, well-educated and professional staff of approximately 425 located throughout ten departments.
Applications are being accepted for a part-time (approximately 20 hours per week) Municipal Court Judge. This position is appointed by the Mayor with consent of the City Council, works independently, and will serve an initial one year term. The Judge must be able to make a sufficient time commitment to ensure the efficient and proper operation of the court and coordination with other impacted departments. The Judge must embrace and apply the Lenexa Municipal Justice philosophy which provides maintaining a safe community where there is confidence and respect in the law; where there is an accessible, efficient, neutral forum for the administration of justice that is delivered fairly, timely and consistently, and where fiscal responsibility and judicial independence is exercised. The Lenexa Municipal Court is a busy, growing court with a staff of eight (8) employees including a Court Manager who will assist the Judge with court administration. The 2009 caseload consisted of 17,000 charges filed with the Municipal Court, approximately 40% being parking and traffic infractions and 60% were misdemeanors and public offenses.
QUALIFICATIONS: The Judge must be admitted to the practice of law in the State of Kansas and be a citizen of the Untied States. A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the active practice of law as a lawyer in any Kansas court is required. Key skills will include courtroom management, research capability, staying current on applicable legal topics, ability to articulate rulings, and providing written opinions as needed. Possess high personal, moral and professional integrity befitting the position of Municipal Court Judge. Have professional experience in supervision or administrative matters and have demonstrated skills working with employees and other groups participating in the Municipal Court. Be willing to occasionally represent the City at civic events and City programs, demonstrating the leadership qualities necessary to enhance the public image and professional stature of the court. If selected, continued legal practice in other municipal courts will be prohibited.
